Why you'll love it
Niseko is Japan's best-known ski area, on Hokkaido, famous for deep, light powder snow under the cone of Mount Yotei. It gets Triptakeo's top score for adventure, and scores 9 out of 10 for nature and safety, which makes it one of the easiest ski trips in Asia.
The best time to visit Niseko is December to March, the ski season, with the deepest snow in January and February. Those are also the busiest and priciest months. Summer, from June to September, is green and quiet, with hiking, rafting and cycling.
Ski or snowboard across the linked resorts of Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri, and soak in an onsen afterwards. Hirafu village has the most restaurants and bars. Flights arrive at New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, about two to three hours away by road. The shared airport bus costs about A$55 per person each way (est.), and isn't included in our estimate.
Niseko suits skiers, snowboarders and families on a winter holiday.
