Why you'll love it
Hakuba is a valley of ski resorts in the Japanese Alps of Nagano, known for heavy snow, big mountain views and a lively village scene. It gets Triptakeo's top score for adventure and nature, and scores 9 out of 10 for safety.
The best time to visit Hakuba is December to March, the ski season, with the deepest snow in January and February. Those are also the busiest and priciest months. From June to September the valley turns green, with hiking, rafting and cooler air than the coast.
Ski or snowboard across ten resorts, including Happo-One, Hakuba 47 and Cortina, and soak in an onsen afterwards. Echoland and Happo village have the most restaurants and bars. Flights arrive in Tokyo, and the trip to Hakuba takes about four to five hours by bus, or by fast train to Nagano and then a bus. That transfer isn't included in our estimate.
Hakuba suits skiers, snowboarders and groups of friends on a winter holiday.
