Why you'll love it

Banff is a mountain town in Canada's Rocky Mountains, inside a national park of turquoise lakes, glaciers and wildlife. It gets Triptakeo's top score for adventure, nature and safety, and scores 9 out of 10 for romance and families.

The best time to visit Banff is June to September for hiking and lakes, and December to March for skiing. July and August are the busiest and priciest months. Spring and late autumn are quieter, though some lakes stay frozen into June.

See Lake Louise and Moraine Lake early in the morning, ride the gondola up Sulphur Mountain, and soak in the Banff Upper Hot Springs. Drive the Icefields Parkway to the Columbia Icefield. In winter, ski Sunshine Village, Lake Louise and Norquay. Flights land in Calgary, about 90 minutes away by road; that transfer isn't included in our estimate.

Banff suits nature lovers, families and couples wanting a mountain holiday.
